He Built the World's Largest Bee Dataset. Then the Government Deleted Its Version Overnight.

Dr. Noah Wilson-Rich has been stung more times than he can count, and he swears every sting bought him another day of life. That's the fun part. It's not the reason I couldn't stop thinking about this conversation.

Twenty years ago he was a broke grad student with no car and no lab, selling beehives off a Facebook page with a single pitch: you keep the honey, we keep the data. City bus to the hives, clipboard in hand, one data point at a time. That slow, unglamorous work became the largest bee-health dataset on the planet. And it's the reason his AI actually does something, while most "AI for nature" pitches are a slide deck looking for a problem.

Then a single political decision proved his whole thesis right, overnight.

A federal pollinator program he worked on didn't get quietly defunded. It vanished. Scientific beehives physically hauled off courthouse lawns and agency headquarters across the country, in a matter of hours. His takeaway wasn't anger. It was that he needs to build a system where nobody is allowed to be in charge of it, ever.

What he's replacing it with gets strange fast. Blockchain that has nothing to do with getting rich. Data centers reimagined as biodiversity sites. A free AI tool that's already live, getting smarter every time a stranger logs a sick hive. And a claim I keep turning over: that bee data is now a genuine national security issue.

He's mostly right. I think he's wrong about one important thing. That part is in the full conversation,
